This article examines the adaptive strategies employed by Andean farming families in the province of Yauyos (Peru) to cope with the multidimensional crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and how these strategies relate to long-term processes of rural change. The main findings indicate that COVID-19 acted as a catalyst, bringing to light and exacerbating preexisting structural conditions of inequality and marginalization. Response strategies drew on local and traditional practices, such as subsistence production, collective labor, and bartering, showing that social networks and community institutions function as a form of collective insurance. However, this adaptation takes place within a context of structural vulnerability marked by the effects of climate change, the presence of extractive activities (mining), and the persistent marginalization of small-scale agriculture in public policy.
