This essay addresses one form of inequity: segregation. Contemporary approaches in education point to the importance of recognizing the diversity of school environments as a way of fostering respect and, above all, the inclusion of everyone in integrated environments. However, several recent studies show that, both internationally and in Peru, this diversity is not appreciated in many schools, which segregate students. The authors analyze how policies that have regulated school choice, school admission and the assignment of students to different educational trajectories condition or accentuate the levels of segregation by socioeconomic level in the Peruvian educational system as a whole. The essay aims at recognizing segregation where it exists in order to seek forms of inclusion that will strengthen our democratic system, in line with the proposal of the National Education Project to 2036 of the National Education Council when it speaks of the development of full citizenship through education.
