One of the most important problems of education in Peru is the low efficiency of public primary education. This article analyzes the impact of two types of public early education programs, the Centros de Educación Inicial (CEI) and the Programas No Escolarizados de Educación Inicial (PRONOEI). For this purpose, a retrospective survey was used, conducted in nine public schools in Lima that showed high repetition rates. Among those children who went through a CEI, the probability of obtaining a satisfactory result in language increased by 25%, while in mathematics it increased by 22%. For children who went through a PRONOEI, these probabilities increased by 15 and 17% in language and mathematics, respectively. Key words: preschool, performance, first grade, public school, repetition.
