Remote Tutoring to Help Students Catch Up on What They’ve Missed
Can we support academic recovery without relying on the internet?
An experimental study conducted in 60 schools in Ayacucho evaluated Desafía-T a Aprender, a remote math tutoring program implemented by GRADE with technical support from the Inter-American Development Bank.
Key findings:
✅Mathematics results were positive, though modest.
✅The effect was most evident in growth mindset: students reinforced the idea that they can develop their capacities through effort and learning.
✅ Sustained participation made a difference, but results were not the same for everyone: no significant improvements were detected among rural students or those whose native language is an indigenous language.
Low-tech tutoring offers an alternative for learning recovery, but its reach also depends on overcoming geographical, linguistic, and participation barriers.
