In this context, the objective of this project is to estimate efficiency indicators for small commercial agriculture and to determine the role of individual producer characteristics (such as scale of production, wealth, education, risk aversion, access to credit or technical assistance) in the observed differences in efficiency. Likewise, using both parametric techniques (stochastic frontier estimation) and non-parametric techniques based on flexible linear programming methodologies (data envelopment analysis-DEA), we will seek to decompose the efficiency indicators to assess whether such inefficiencies stem from not taking advantage of economies of scale, technical inefficiencies or allocative inefficiencies. The comparison of two markedly different smallholder farming contexts, the Piura and Mantaro valleys, will enrich the analysis by showing the role played by differentiated access to public goods and services and the degree of development of product and factor markets in the level of efficiency achieved by small producers.
