The year 1930 marks a turning point in the trajectory of the Peruvian economy. The purpose of this chapter is to document the role played by the development of the domestic market within the national economic dynamics and its interrelation with the export sector. The analysis starts with a general characterization of the period and then focuses on its dynamics through different periods of economic policies and ups and downs of the world economy. The evolution of the domestic market and the industrialization process are indispensable elements for understanding the Peruvian economy during the 20th century. The classic image of Peru as an exporter of raw materials, with no major development of internal economic structures, is profoundly contrasted with the evidence of a very interesting industrial and commercial development in the middle years of the last century.
