This study highlights the centrality of the spatial dimension in the statistical analysis of well-being, an analysis that seeks to support decision-making in some areas of public policy. It should be noted that the aims of the study do not include the definition and validation of a conceptual framework; rather, they are focused on more modest objectives: to present evidence that will allow the debate on spatial heterogeneity and its implications for the dynamics of poverty, and to outline methodological approaches for this type of analysis.

The study is part of a set of research developed by the authors focused on estimating and analyzing the dynamics of poverty in Peru over the last three decades at lower levels of aggregation than those usually available. This article takes advantage of per capita expenditure and poverty estimates consistently constructed at the subnational level for the years 1993 and 2005 (Escobal & Ponce, 2008).
