Using a provincial panel for the period between the agricultural censuses of 1994 and 2012, this study aims to clarify the sign of the relationship between agrarian structure and rural poverty dynamics in Peru. The descriptive results reveal that the provinces with significant reductions in rural poverty rates are those whose agricultural units had, at the beginning of the period, a greater amount of agricultural land -in irrigation equivalent-, a less fragmented ownership structure, a more equitable land distribution and a higher proportion of producers with technological innovation capacity. On the other hand, the econometric results suggest that an important determinant of the observed rural poverty dynamics is landholding size rather than agrarian structure. It also shows that provinces with a higher emigration rate and a lower immigration rate experience a larger increase in rural poverty. Finally, together with variables that may be determining differentiated access to markets, there is still a positive impact of the degree of diversification of productive activity on the possibilities of generating poverty reduction dynamics in rural areas.
