Alfredo Torres’s op-ed highlights data by Hugo Ñopo on teacher salaries

The Executive Chairman at IPSOS Perú, Alfredo Torres, highlights data on teacher salaries, published by our senior researcher, Hugo Ñopo in Twitter: “No one argues  that teacher salaries should improve, but the they are also improving. According to calculations by Hugo Ñopo, researcher at GRADE, their salaries at constant prices are now less than half that in the 1960s, but also more than double that in the late 1980s. The fall in teacher’s real wages began with the economic crisis generated by Juan Velasco in the 1970s and sharpened by Alan Garcia’s hyperinflation in the 1980s. Its recovery began in the 1990s and accelerated in the last 15 years thanks to the economic growth of the country. Torres published his op-ed in El Comercio.
