Sustained economic growth is the main driver of poverty reduction. However, the persistence of high levels of poverty in certain sectors of the population and inequalities in the accumulation of human capital call for complementary social policies to help improve these aspects in the short term. One of the instruments currently used are conditional cash transfers to the poor. This article discusses the results obtained by this type of programme in recent years in terms of human capital indicators in different Latin American countries and analyses the implications of these findings.
