In order to address the problems of insecurity, unhealthiness and slum conditions in the Lima La Parada wholesale market, the administration of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima relocated traders to the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima in Santa Anita, which was formally inaugurated in September 2012. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of this strategic change in the perishable product marketing chain on marketing margins, as well as competitiveness and efficiency in the potato production and marketing chain. Based on the work of Azzam (1992), this research has sought to decompose the potato production and marketing chain into three: farmer (producer), wholesaler and retailer. The study recognises that the market structure in which these agents operate may or may not be competitive. The study assesses, empirically, the extent to which the middleman (the wholesaler) can exercise market power, both in buying and selling the product, and how this power has changed after the relocation of the market to Santa Anita. The results of the study suggest that the relocation of traders from La Parada to the new Santa Anita market has had a limited impact on the cost structure and/or the degree of competition in the potato production and marketing chain
