Discontinuation of schooling by students in secondary education in Peru is a critical problem that impacts the development of young people and their future opportunities. Despite advances in educational coverage, structural challenges persist that unequally affect different groups of students. This paper examines trends in secondary school dropout, its main causes and the public policies implemented in Peru and Latin America to mitigate this problem.

The analysis considers national data and longitudinal evidence, as well as recommendations from international agencies to improve school retention and ensure timely completion of secondary education. It addresses economic, social and educational factors that influence student retention, as well as strategies implemented in different contexts to reduce dropout.
