In this chapter, the authors explore the impact of community environmental monitoring (MCA) in territories with a long history of mining in Peru and Chile. They find that this initiative has a positive impact on the political empowerment of local communities, which turn it into a tool to regain control of their environment through environmental monitoring and to claim environmental justice from an integral perspective, which takes into account the cumulative negative impacts of mining on the environment and human health. Through the cases of Espinar and Quintero-Puchuncaví, it is shown how these initiatives, by politicizing the generation of knowledge, challenge the traditional paradigms of state environmental governance, generally hierarchical and centered on expert knowledge, promoting – instead – more inclusive and fairer forms of environmental management, despite the challenges of funding and lack of official recognition.
