In this essay, the authors focus on a specific topic, namely the Technological, Pedagogical and Disciplinary Knowledge (TPACK) model. The adoption of this model – or others – could help guide the long-awaited and much-needed reform of initial teacher education and professional development, which should be part of a broader strategy aimed at further strengthening the teaching career. The authors briefly review the digital education programmes and initiatives proposed in recent years, which have not been as successful as expected, thus creating a digital divide. Finally, they propose strategies to strengthen teaching competences, starting with a diagnosis that allows planning programmes and providing resources. It is through teachers, their skills and the technological resources available that will contribute to better educate all students.
