The general objective of this study is to identify the determinants of the decision to attend (or drop out of) secondary school in rural areas by considering aspects of both supply and demand. To this end, the study uses as a source of information surveys applied to young students and dropouts from secondary education in rural areas. The sample included rural towns with and without secondary school in order to identify factors associated with educational supply and demand. It was carried out in 23 departments of Peru. The document is organised as follows. The second section presents a brief conceptual framework. The third section describes how the instruments were designed and the characteristics of the sample used in the study. In the fourth section, the results of the study are presented, including the profiles of students and dropouts, the analysis of the declared causes of dropout, as well as the factors associated with the decision to attend school (based on the construction of an econometric model for this purpose). Finally, some conclusions and policy recommendations are proposed.
