To understand the role of public and private assets in rural income generation opportunities, this research has estimated a model that seeks to explain both rural households’ decisions to participate in different types of activities (agricultural/non-agricultural; wage/non-wage) and their ability to generate income once they choose one or more activities.
Controlling for household characteristics (human and physical capital holdings) and environmental characteristics (geographical characteristics and characteristics of the village centre in which the household resides), the determinants of participation decisions and income from all sources have been modelled jointly.
