The objective of the paper is to show the importance of off-farm labor activities for the Peruvian rural sector during the last decade. The paper shows that the relative importance of family labor in off-farm activities rose from 24.1 % of total wages in 1985 to 35.3 % in 1997. Currently, 56% of annual net family income in the rural sector comes from these activities, which suggests that these “complementary” activities can hardly be considered as such. The article characterizes the behavior of agricultural producers according to their asset holdings. Through the estimation of a logit model, the paper seeks to determine the factors that contribute to or hinder labor decisions, finding that human capital and access to public goods and services are key factors that facilitate the choice of off-farm activities.
