Presentation

The current pandemic has demonstrated that the care economy is in crisis. Unpaid and paid care work is predominantly represented by women and, due to the need to stay at home to care for family members and children, their situation has worsened, exacerbating inequalities. The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of the role of caregivers and has shown that most of them work in the informal sector and earn low incomes. The current context has created an impetus to aggressively advance the care economy agenda, contribute to the achievement of SDG #5 and Agenda 2030, and ensure a more equitable economic recovery. The main objective of the study is to catalyze systemic change in the care economy for gender equality by fostering collaboration between researchers, public and private sector innovations, women’s rights advocacy organizations, and donors. In this regard, the project will address four specific objectives. The first objective is to support public sector care economy innovations in Latin America and Asia to strengthen their impact for gender equality through applied research. The second objective is to support solutions aimed at the bottom-of-the-pyramid market to help address the challenges of the care economy for gender equality through applied research. The third objective is to foster peer learning and build capacity for key actors to use evidence to inform action for positive change in the care economy by supporting the Global Care Partnership. The fourth objective is to synthesize and disseminate knowledge and evidence to generate high-level, high-impact commitments for change.
