Presentation

The study is part of a research initiative of the Economic Development Institute of Germany, which also involves two other countries, the Philippines and Ghana. The study aims to identify patterns of carbon consumption in middle class households in Lima, with a focus on transportation, household appliances and housing, and its determinants. We want to answer four questions:

(1) What factors affect carbon consumption patterns in the middle classes?

(2) What role do income, status considerations and “environmental values” play?

(3) To what extent and in what ways do the middle classes influence the political economy of public policies linked to carbon emissions ?, and

(4) What characterizes households with low carbon consumption?

To address these questions, a survey will be conducted to a representative sample of middle class households. Based on its results, a second phase of the study is planned that implements experiments aimed at testing potential policies to promote low carbon consumption patterns.
