Hugo Ñopo discussed in BBC Peru’s economic strategy to face coronavirus impact
Hugo Ñopo, senior researcher at GRADE, shared his opinion with BBC News World on the opportunities and challenges of Peru’s economic plan to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
The article explores the rationale behind the package of measures to revive the economy in the country. Savings after three decades of fiscal discipline and the low indebtedness of the country will allow us to face the crisis.
However, challenges do arise. “We are a highly informal economy, protection networks are still precarious, we have structural variables in the microeconomic that are still very precarious,” said Ñopo. To this is added a still weak health network and a growth below previous years.
Despite this, “our macro strengths are a good shield against the coronavirus,” says the economist.
