An op-ed by Richard Webb cites Eduardo Zegarra’s estimation of land reconcentration
The recent article by Richard Webb, director at the San Martin de Porres University’s Institute of Peru, “Harvesting figures”, addresses the influence of two figures related to agriculture: one in regard of the origin of the agrarian reform and another in regard to the growth of the agricultural sector during the last two centuries.
Regarding the first figure, Webb refers to a calculation of the structure of land ownership, which differed with the census figure. In this line, he cites the estimate of land reconcentration that Eduardo Zegarra, Senior Researcher at GRADE, addressed in his article “Agricultural smallholding and concentration of land in Peruvian agriculture: the truth of a truth“: “In a recent calculation, Eduardo Zegarra […] considers that almost one hundred hectares of natural grass are needed to own the value of one hectare of irrigated land on the coast. ”
Given the great heterogeneity in the quality and productive potential of the land in Peru, Eduardo takes into account where is the agricultural area and what is the use of this land, as a pattern of comparison between units depending on the different productive capacity this.
