María Balarin, Senior Researcher at GRADE, is one of the authors of the book The State and Education in Latin America: Fault Lines, Foundations and Alternatives, published by Brill and edited by D. Brent Edwards Jr., Mauro C. Moschetti and Claudia M. Díaz-Ríos.
Beyond analyzing contemporary political processes, the volume examines the deeper state foundations through which reforms are introduced and contested. Informed by a range of theorical perspectives on the state, the chapters in this volume not only help explain the conditions shaping policy success and failure in the context of political-economic globalization and its effect on education.
María’s chapter, titled The Making and Unmaking of Education Reforms in Countries with Weak States: the case of Peru, offers insights to better understand the mechanisms through which a weak State can influence educational policy processes.
On May 18th, this book will be launch. The virtual event includes an overview by the editors, presentations by contributors and a discussion with the audience.
