Our Senior Researcher Manuel Glave discussed the findings of the research article “The Legacy of the Spanish Conquista in the Andes: Mining Mita, Persistent Social Unrest, and Cultural Divergence”, by César Huaroto from the Department of Departamento de Economics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, and Francisco Gallego.
The article addresses the persistent effect on social unrest of the Mining Mita, a colonial institution of forced labor and migration that affected the indigenous communities in Peru between 1573 and 1811. Using a geographic regression discontinuity design for identification, the authors provide causal evidence that Mita areas have experienced higher levels of social unrest since the late 18th century.
