The results of the II Experimental Impact Measurement of Sinfonía por Peru (A Symphony for Peru) were presented by Juan José Díaz and Juan Leon, senior researchers at GRADE, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Sinfonía por el Perú is a social and musical education program founded by the lyric singer Juan Diego Florez. Through the creation of the network of coexistence centers and musical education, called nuclei, the System of Children’s and Youth Orchestras and Choirs is consolidated at the national level as an instrument of social inclusion and value formation for children and adolescents.

The evaluation was carried out in two comparative stages over four years, with a sample of 701 documented cases in Huánuco and Manchay. This second evaluation is done four years after the first. The methodology was of experimental type, to guarantee the attribution of impacts, through a measurement of ex-post results indicators. The groups of study were randomized, assuring the independence between the distribution and the observable and unobservable characteristics of the project participants. Thus, selection bias was avoided and it allows differences in outcome indicators between both groups to be attributed objectively. The participants were divided into two groups, one intervention and one control, composed of children and adolescents belonging to the same environment, situation and context, which were incorporated at the beginning of the study.

The dimensions analyzed in the study addressed three major areas: personal, family and educational. The socio-emotional and cognitive development indicators of the previous study were repeated, to which were added new indicators linked to socio-emotional development, educational aspirations and expectations, and risk behaviors.

This second study finds a pairing in the results of socio-emotional and cognitive development, but the early impact on these indicators found in the first study has a favorable impact on development and maturity, and also translates into other dimensions of young people’s lives.

Among the findings, there is less time taking care of family members, less time spent on domestic chores, more time spent studying at home and more time in the practice of music. In addition, there is a decrease in severe risk behaviors and teenage pregnancy. You may see all findings in the diagram above.
