Our adjunct researcher and coordinator of the qualitative component of Young Lives Peru, Vanessa Rojas, was a panelist at the In whose “best interest”? Childhoods, children and the international policy of protection international conference. The event took place from May 20 to 22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

During the seminar, international experts shared their thoughts on the international regime for the protection of children with the aim of going beyond the focus on the victimization of children.

On the second day of the event, Vanessa shared the findings in Peru of the Young Marriage and Parenthood Study (YMAPS), in the panel Stolen childhoods? Experiences of ‘Out of Place’ Children and Young People.

The main idea of the findings is that in order to understand young cohabitation and parenthood, it is necessary to understand violence towards women and inequitable gender relations. Girls in Peru have access to basic education and finish it, but does this education give them the necessary tools or do they empower them to fight for their rights and their voice?
